Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs, Johnnie Carson, has been granted the Spain's Order of Civil Merit, the maximum recognition that Spain awards to individuals who make an extraordinary contribution to bettering relations between our nation and the rest of the international community. Ambassador Morenés hosted the ceremony.

Ambassador Jonnie Carson's 37-year foreign service career includes ambassadorships to Kenya, Zimbabwe and Uganda. Earlier he worked in Portugal, Botswana, Mozambique and Nigeria, a long and quite distinguished diplomatic career that continues as a Senior Advisor at the prestigious U.S. Institute of Peace.

In his remarks, Ambassador Morenés highlighted that Spain is the only European country that shares land border with the African continent through the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, therefore "Spain feels Africa's giant beating heart and we cannot ignore it," he stated.

Spain's is strongly committed to continental stability in Africa and is an essential participant in EU Missions in countries such as Mali, The Central African Republic and Somalia, among others. Ambassador Carson "has demonstrated profound knowledge and appreciation for Spain's diplomatic posture in Africa, and has always shown the friendlines of dispositions when working with Spain to tackle the common African challenges that unite us," said Ambassador Morenés.
