The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ildefonso Castro, has travelled to Washington where he has met with his counterpart, the Deputy Secretary of State, John J. Sullivan. Both stated the excellent bilateral relationship and discussed international issues of common interest.

At the bilateral level, issues such as defence, security, the fight against terrorism, the transatlantic relationship in the framework of NATO and European energy security were addressed. In terms of the fight against jihadi terrorism, the Global Coalition against Daesh, of which both Spain and the United States are part of, was highlighted. The next ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition will take place on 13 February in Kuwait. This will be a chance to analyse the new challenges for the security and development of Syria and Iraq.

During the meeting other issues on the international agenda were also addressed, such as Venezuela, North Korea, Iran, the situation in the Sahel, the Maghreb and the Gulf of Guinea. Sullivan thanked Castro for the role that Spain plays in sensitive or conflict areas in countries such as Lebanon (UNIFIL), Afghanistan and Mali, where Spain has just taken the mandate of the European Union Training Mission (EUTM).

The State Secretary also met with the Deputy National Security Adviser, Richard Waddell, with whom he discussed the main issues regarding international security, such as North Korea, the Sahel, the Gulf of Guinea and Iran.

State Secretary Castro also held meetings with the presidents of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee. In these meetings he was able to exchange points of view regarding the bilateral relationship, as well as analyse different international issues.

Finally, State Secretary Castro shared Spain's vision regarding Africa and our close relations with a continent that is of great importance for our interests with various think tanks.
