The Ambassador hosted a celebration of Spain's service men and women coinciding with Spain's Armed Forces Day. The holiday commemorates the sacrifices of those serving in all branches of the Spanish military, and celebrates the integration of the armed forces into civil society over the past four decades.
Both the Ambassador and Defense Attaché in the United States Ángel Valcárcel opened the event with speeches giving thanks to the service of Spain´s armed forces. Ambassador Gil-Casares noted how Spanish troops work shoulder to shoulder with U.S. military forces in many parts of the world. Brigadier-General Valcárcel concluded his remarks with a toast to the King, H.M. Felipe VI.
In attendance at the event were representatives of the militaries of many other countries, including the United States. Also attending the event were representatives from the Spanish Navy Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, which was docked in the Baltimore Harbor.
