Ambassador Thomas Shannon, decorated as Commander by Number of the Order of Isabel la Católica
3/7/2019
On March 7, 2019, in the name of H.M. King Felipe VI, Ambassador Cabanas decorated Ambassador Thomas Shannon (U.S.) as Commander by Number of the Order of Isabel la Católica, a high honor recognizing his extraordinary contribution to strengthening relations between Spain and the international community.

In his remarks, Ambassador Cabanas expressed what a great privilege it was to bestow this honor on Ambassador Shannon, as per the recommendation of his predecessors. “His Majesty the King has deemed it appropriate to distinguish Ambassador Shannon with the grade of Commander by Number of the Order of Isabel la Católica, in recognition of his brilliant career and the contributions he has made to shape the foreign policy of the US in a part of the world very dear to Spain.” Ambassador Cabanas highlighted Ambassador Shannon’s work in and regarding Latin America, a region to which Spain has historically and continues to be very closely linked.

Ambassador Shannon expressed his appreciation for Spain and the strong relationship between Spain and the United States. “As Bernardo de Gálvez did for the United States, Spain has always been there protecting our flank,” he said, referring to the Spanish hero of the American Revolution and honorary citizen of the United States.

Now retired, Ambassador Shannon most recently served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs and U.S. Ambassador to Brazil and managed the U.S. Department of State during the transition to the Trump Administration.
