22nd Annual United States Spain Forum
9/25/2017
Spain's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Alfonso Dastis, took part in the 22nd edition of the Spain-United States Forum, held on 22 and 23 September in Williamsburg (Virginia), which was also attended by the Minister for Defence, María Dolores de Cospedal and the North American Secretary of Defence, James Mattis.

The annual forum gathers together leading officials and member of civil society of the two countries with the aim of strengthening ties between the two countries.

Minister Dastis took part in the inauguration of the event, together with Senator Tim Kaine (President of the US-Spain Council) and the President of the Spain-United States Council Foundation, José Manuel Entrecanales.

In his speech, Alfonso Dastis recalled the Hispanic roots of the United States and the human and cultural exchanges between the two countries. “Nowadays, “relations with the USA are key for Spain”, pointed out the minister. “We are old allies and friends. Over the last few decades we have consolidated our ties in different fields which have led to us now enjoying very sound relations, that have become increasingly more balanced and are based on common interests and shared values”.

Minister Dastis highlighted that Spain and the United States collaborate closely on security and defence issues particularly in the fight against Jihadi terrorism. The minister spoke a few words in memory of the victims of terrorism and of all those who fight to defend the values of democracy and the rule of law.

The minister also reviewed other areas in which Spain and the USA work together such as technology, infrastructures, the digital world, culture and tourism.

To end, the minister recalled the value and importance of the role of the Spain-United States Forum, which allows both countries to learn more about each other and improve mutual understanding, which contributes to strengthening our alliance and the friendly relations that exist between our two countries.

The Forum agreed on three main issues: 1) The future of NATO: the roles of Spain and the USA; 2) Infrastructures and economic growth: opportunities for business cooperation between Spain and the United States and, 3) Tourism and technology: creating opportunities for cultural connections.

The Forum is organised annually by the Spain-United States Council Foundation and the US-Spain Council, meeting on an alternate basis between Spain and the USA. Last year, the Forum was held in Santiago de Compostela. Among the issues addressed at the work session, noteworthy were those related to business and financial promotion, as well as the analysis of certain economic sectors, such as infrastructures, technology and energy.
