Dr. John Hamre Decorated as Commander of Number of the Order of Civil Merit
11/16/2021
On behalf of H.M. King Felipe VI, Ambassador Santiago Cabanas decorated Dr. John Hamre, President and CEO of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), as Commander of Number of the Order of Civil Merit of Spain.

Before joining CSIS in 2000, Dr. Hamre served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense under President Clinton, preceded by a variety of posts at the Department of Defense, Senate, and House of Representatives over a decades-long career in Washington.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Cabanas recognized Dr. Hamre as a great friend of Spain, who has always recognized the strong bond Spain and the United States share, from a common legacy to modern-day bilateral ties, particularly in the area of security and defense.

“All friendships need to be nurtured. At the Department of Defense and CSIS, during all your life, you have nurtured that relationship, the importance of that friendship, as our countries have showed recently in the evacuation from Afghanistan. For that friendship, for the work you have done to foster relations between our two countries, it is my personal honor to bestow this decoration upon you,” Ambassador Cabanas said.

Upon receiving the honor, Dr. Hamre shared his appreciation and thoughts on Spain-U.S. relations: “I’ve often said that Spain is an under-appreciated ally, and I do believe that the best parts of our relationship are yet to come. Spain can be an extremely important big brother to the United States in our relationship with our partners in Latin America. We must remember that transatlantic is not just the north Atlantic, but the south Atlantic.”
