Ambassador Cabanas Travels to Miami

Ambassador Santiago Cabanas visited Miami this week, meeting with local officials and exploring Spain’s business and educational connections in the area.

Ambassador Cabanas arrived in Miami on November 4. He started the day by greeting the personnel at the Consulate General of Spain in the city. He then held a meeting with Mayor Vince Lago of Coral Gables. During the meeting, the Ambassador delivered a replica of the medal given to the founder of the City of Coral Gables, George E. Merrick, when he was decorated as a member of the Order of Isabel la Católica (Queen Isabella I) by King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1927. The medal will be displayed at the Coral Gables Museum.
The Ambassador then met with the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, and the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, José “Pepe” Díaz. The conversation in all three meetings focused on Spain’s vast economic and business presence in the area, in addition to the bilateral and historic relationship between Spain, the United States, and the State of Florida and the immense Spanish legacy in the State.
The following day, November 5, Ambassador Cabanas held a working breakfast with a group of Spanish entrepreneurs and then visited International Studies Preparatory Academy (ISPA) in Coral Gables. ISPA is a bilingual high school, where students graduate with a dual American and Spanish degree, and with Spanish visiting teachers among the staff. The Embassy’s Education Office coordinates the Visiting Teachers Program, which brings teachers from Spain to teach Spanish, and other subjects in Spanish, in schools throughout the United States.
The Ambassador ended his official visit by attending and speaking at the Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Miami’s 40th Anniversary Gala, where José Moro, President of Bodegas Emilio Moro, and the Cosentino Group received the Ponce de León Executive and Company of the Year Awards, respectively.
