Working Visa

In order to work in Spain, foreigners must hold a valid Spanish authorisation/ (Work permit) which is applied and obtained in Spain (point 5).
After this, a visa to work and reside in Spain can be issued from the Spanish Consulate in the applicants’ country of residence.

How to proceed?

The foreign worker must obtain a job offer from an employer in Spain; the employer in Spain must make an application for working papers for the applicant at the “Subdelegación de Gobierno” (“Dependencia del Area de Trabajo e Inmigración, Oficina de Extranjeros”) in the province where the applicant is going to work. When this file is approved, the applicant will obtain a “AUTORIZACIÓN RESIDENCIA TEMPORAL Y TRABAJO POR CUENTA AJENA” from the “Subdelegación de Gobierno”.

Once you have this authorization, you are entitled to apply for a visa in the Spanish Consulate in your country of residence. You have to proceed then to the Consulate with original documents and copies sorted as follows:

1. Schengen National Visa application form & PHOTOGRAPH glued to it: the application must be completed and signed; photo must be recent (2,5cm x 3,5cm), clearly showing the face, the forehead hairline and ears on a white background.

2. Passport. The passport must be valid for a minimum of three months from the date of completion of their stay in the Schengen territory, with at least one blank page available to start the visa.
3. Singaporean IC: NRIC, employment card/ dependant pass/ student pass/ PR card (and re-entry permit).

4. Approval work permit for foreign workers properly registered and signed (with the N.I.E and N. E. V. numbers) by the competent authority of the Spanish Government (the “Subdelegación de Gobierno” in the province where the applicant is going to work: “AUTORIZACIÓN RESIDENCIA TEMPORAL Y TRABAJO POR CUENTA AJENA”).This document must be submitted at this Consular Section within thirty (30) days from the date stamped by the Ministry of Labour in Spain.

5. Medical certificate: This certificate must be on letterhead and signed in handwriting by a doctor (MD). The official seal of the health centre will not be accepted in lieu of a signature of the physician. The validity of this certificate is 3 months from the date of issue. You can find a sample of the medical certificate in our website. The doctor may also use this sample as a guide to write their own certificate. Remember that it must specifically mention the WHO International Health Regulation (2005).

6. Criminal record of the past five years: This certificate must be issued by the police authorities of the countries where the applicant has resided for the past five years. The certificate shall be three months from the date of issue. If the country is not Singapore the certificate must be legalized by the Spanish Consulate in that country.

7. Spouses who accompany the principal applicant must submit a separate application accompanied by all documents listed above, plus:

    a. Marriage Certificate legalized; if the country is not Singapore the certificate must be legalized by the Spanish Consulate in that country.

8. The children accompanying the principal applicant must make a separate application accompanied by all documents listed above, plus:

    a.  Authenticated birth certificate; if the country is not Singapore the certificate must be legalized by the Spanish Consulate in that country.
    b. Likewise, the number 7 "criminal record certificate" will be presented only in the case of children over 14 years.

9. Copy of the work contract for which the work permit has been granted, sealed by the Immigration Office in Spain (Oficina de Extranjería). A printed version of a scanned copy is accepted.

 Important notes:
  • A non-refundable fee of SGD 97.20 is required to process the file. The fee will not be refunded in case of refusal
  • You must apply at the Consulate/Embassy of Spain in PERSON
  • If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply at the Consulate/Embassy of the country that will be your main destination meaning the country where you will be staying most of the nights.
  • If you intend to visit several Schengen countries but you will stay the same number of nights in each of them, you must apply at the Consulate of the country you will enter first.
  • The Embassy has full authority to evaluate, deny and request more documents than those submitted by the applicant. The latter is hereby informed that submitting those documents requested DOES NOT guarantee automatic issuance of the visa.
  • Processing Time: this kind of visa can take 30 to 90 days to be approved. (No express services available)
  • Mind that you can be requested for a personal interview to clarify some aspects of your application/travel.

This Embassy has an online appointment system which can be accessed via the following link:

No visa application will be accepted without prior appointment.
Please be informed that one appointment per visa applicant is required. Several applications under a single appointment will not be accepted.
