Non-lucrative residence visas

These visas allow someone to reside in Spain but do not entitle to engage in a professional activity or employment.

 

NOTE: The consular jurisdiction of the Spanish Embassy in Ottawa covers only the National Capital Region (Ottawa and Gatineau).
If you live in a city other than Ottawa and Gatineau, you should apply for your visa at the Spanish Consulate General in Toronto or Montreal according to their consular jurisdictions. 

NOTICE: ON-LINE APPOINTMENTS booked for visa applications through the Spanish embassy's website in Ottawa are FREE OF CHARGE.

If you wish to reside in Spain, you must get an appointment ON-LINE in order to apply for a visa and submit PHOTOCOPIES OF THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS, as well as ORIGINALS for verification:

  1. A valid passport or travel document recognized by Spain with a minimum validity of one year.
  2. If the applicant is not a Canadian citizen, he/she must provide documentation proving his/her residence status in Canada (permanent residence permit, working permit, study permit, etc.) 
  3. A medical certificate issued by your family doctor worded as follows:

    “This medical certificate states that Mr./Mrs.….. does not suffer from any diseases that may have serious consequences on public health in accordance with the provisions contained in the 2005 International Health Regulations”

  4. A Police Check issued by the authorities of all the countries where an applicant has resided for the last 5 years, including Canada.
    NOTE: The Police Check should be issued by the RCMP and contain the fingerprints of the visa applicant. You can find information on how to obtain one here.
    We will not accept Police Checks issued by local Police Stations.
  5. Sufficient economic means at the time of the visa application, or proof of a source of regular income without having to engage in any business or professional activity in Spain, for you and your family, where applicable, for the requested period of residence and in the following amounts:
    1. A monthly amount of 2,151.00 Euros for 2020 or its equivalent in a foreign currency to support yourself during the requested period of residence in Spain.
    2. A monthly amount of 538.00 Euros for 2020 or its equivalent in a foreign currency for the support of your dependents during their requested period of residence in Spain. This amount is additional to the one mention in the previous point 1.
  6. A public or private medical insurance with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain.
  7. A completed and signed visa application form with one (1) recent full-face color photograph taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio no more than six months before the date you submit your application. It should also meet the requirements pictured on this link.
  8. A completed and signed non-lucrative residency permit application EX-01.
  9. A completed and signed permit application form Modelo 790 Codigo 052 (Instructions to fill it out)
  10. Visa fee: CAN $ 92.90 (year 2021), except when a reciprocity fee applies to other countries, such as Canada and USA. Visa processing fee for Canadians is $ CAN 762.00. Please refer to the consular fee chart for other nationalities. Only cash, money order or certified cheque payable to the "Embassy of Spain" will be accepted.
  11. Non-lucrative residence permit fee: CAN $ 16.80 (as of Januray 1st 2021). Only cash, money order or certified cheque payable to the "Embassy of Spain" will be accepted.
  12. A print out of your on-line visa appointment

Please note that during the examination of a visa application, some additional documents may be requested in order to determine that all requirements to obtain the visa are met.
Also, a Spanish translation of all documents submitted may be required in accordance to the provisions of article 15 of "Act 39/2015 on Uniform Administrative Procedures of the Spanish Public Administration".
In some cases, a personal interview with an applicant may also be required.
