Evacuation flight from Delhi and Goa for stranded Spanish and European tourists
On Saturday 4th April, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation chartered an evacuation flight in the framework of the European Civil Protection Mechanism, which allowed the return to Spain from Goa and Delhi of more than 200 Spanish tourists stranded in India as a result of the global pandemic Covid-19.

Due to the suspension of all commercial flights since March, around 450 Spanish travelers were trapped in India. The Embassy of Spain worked tirelessly to help them return home. Given that most of the Spanish tourists in Delhi had already been sent back home by the Embassy on other European evacuation flights, the key to the success of this evacuation operation in North India was the concentration of tourists in the capital from the different cities and states where they remained. To such end, the Embassy processed more than 250 individual transport permits from more than 35 cities across the country and organizing buses to bring dozens of Spaniards in Rishikesh, Pushkar, Jaipur and Varanasi.

The Spanish tourists concentrated in the capital were able to stay at the Instituto Cervantes in New Delhi. A safe but modest space that the Embassy urgently set up in order to shelter the Spaniards stranded in India, who were facing more and more difficulties to find safe accommodation.
Always faithful to its European commitment, Spain helped a hundred European tourists return home through land transport in India and the evacuation flight from April 4th. German, Belgian, British, Slovenian, Dutch, Irish, Italians, Portuguese and Romanian citizens were able to return to their countries of residence thanks to European and Spanish solidarity.
