Visit of the Spanish Navy Frigate to the Philippines.
Visit of the Frigate “Méndez Núñez”
to the Philippines conmemorating the Magellan-Elcano expedition

Manila, September 4, 2019.
The Spanish Frigate “Méndez Núñez” is set to arrive at the Manila harbor on Thursday, September 5, for a 5 day visit to the Philippines in the framework of the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world by the Magellan-Elcano expedition (1519-1522). On September 7, it will sail towards Baler (Aurora Province) where it will make a stop on Monday, September 9, before continuing its journey to Guam.

At 10 o’clock, Commander Antonio González del Tánago will offer a press conference at the dock where the ship will be moored. The visit of the Ambassador of Spain, H.E. Jorge Moragas, is scheduled at 11.30 am, to be followed at noon by a visit of Secretary of Foreing Affairs, Teodoro Locsin, and Secretary of Defense, Delfin Lorenzana, together with other Filipino high officials, such as Undersecretary Cardozo M. Luna. After visiting the ship proper and signing the book of honor, the guests will witness a demonstration of the Combat Information Center and will be briefed on the characteristics of the frigate and its mission, before proceeding to an official lunch on board.

A larger reception for Filipino authorities and representatives of the Spanish community in the country will take place in the evening the same day.

On Friday, September 6, the crew will participate in several sporting events with members of the Philippine Navy and will then be received at the Navy Headquarters. At 4 pm, Commander Antonio González del Tánago will offer a conference at Instituto Cervantes Intramuros (385 Real Street, Intramuros, Manila) entitled “First Journey Around the World – Primus Circumdedisti Me” about the Magellan-Elcano expedition. The conference is open to the public and will be followed by snacks and drinks.

On September 7th, the Frigate will set sail towards Baler, where it is expected to arrive on Monday, September 9th. Local political, military and religious authorities have been invited to a short ceremony on board, after which members of the crew will land to visit San Luis Church and lay a wreath at the foot of the commemorative plaque that marks the surrender of the last Spanish soldiers in the Philippines to Katipuneros in June 1899, after a year-long siege, prompting President Aguinaldo to issue a decree honoring the soldiers on June 30th. This day has become, since 2003, the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day.

The “Méndez Núñez” (F-104) was built at the Izar shipyard (currently Navantia shipyard) in Ferrol and launched in 2004. It was commissioned to the Spanish Navy in 2006, taking its name from a 19th century Rear Admiral. Since then, it has participated once in NATO’s Operation Active Endeavor in the Eastern Mediterranean to prevent the movement of terrorists and of weapons of mass destruction, and five times in the European Union’s Operation Atalanta to fight against piracy in the Western Indian Ocean. It also participated in the conflict in Lybia in 2011 in the framework of Resolution 1973 of the United Nations Security Council. In June 2016 it joined the NATO Standing Naval Task Force SNMG-1 as commanding ship.

With a crew of 219 men and women, the visiting frigate is one of the five F-100 class Álvaro de Bazán, which are the first European warships that incorporate the american AEGIS combat system. Its radar can detect airplane movements as far as 600 km, which allows it to function on equal terms with the most modern units of the US Navy and to participate in the development of the anti-missile shield. It is also equipped with the Indra Aldebaran system of countermeasures and electronic war, developed and manufactured by the Spanish company Indra, amongst other features
