UN Women Safe Cities Program launches its second phase in the Philippine with the support of the AECID

In a symbolic gesture of solidarity, Ambassador of Spain to the Philippines, Luis A. Calvo Castaño, signed last June 15 Spain´s commitment to the UN Women Safe Cities Program along with Herbert Bautista, Mayor of Quezon City (the largest municipality in the country), Senator Risa Hontiveros, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality, as well as other representatives of the UN Women and local government units in Metro-Manila.

The signing of commitment jump starts the second phase of the said program in the Philippines after the formulation of policies on the prevention of gender-related violence in public spaces in Quezon City.  Its impact is now expected to spread to the entire Metro-Manila through research on gender-related violence in public places, awareness campaigns aimed at changing behavior as well as institution of municipal ordinances to prevent and fight impunity for acts of aggression in public spaces.

The Safe Cities Program, which has the financial support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID www.aecid.es) and is part of the international initiative UN WOMEN, will therefore affect a city of some 12 million inhabitants.

More information on Safe Cities is found in http://www.unwomen.org/en/what-we-do/ending-violence-against-women/creating-safe-public-spaces.
