Photography & visual arts forum "Trasatlántica" makes its Asian debut in Manila
7/13/2017
PHotoESPAÑA and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) partner with the local image provider Pioneer Studios to bring to Manila Trasatlántica, a forum on photography and visual arts that in its Asian debut will offer two sessions of portfolio review, a conference and a workshop that will take place from the 17th to the 20th of July.

The launching of Trasatlántica in Asia, made possible by the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines and the Instituto Cervantes de Manila, comes as it approaches its 10th anniversary in two years´ time, spreading out beyond Spain and Latin America to increase its network of collaborators and undertakings.

The forum´s presence in the Philippine capital also targets the academe as it takes on an informational feature with the involvement of the De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde which will host two of its activities.

Pioneer Studios provides the venue for the two sessions of photo portfolio review to be held on the 19th and 20th of July.  The reviews will offer, for the first time, photographers born or residing in the Philippines the opportunity to present their work to international experts in the field of photography.

A total of 20 participants, selected during an earlier call for candidates, will hold a one-on-one meeting with prominent art curators, publishers and representatives of cultural institutions.  The reviewers include Joselina Cruz, director and curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) in Manila, Eva McGovern, independent curator, Jungmin Lee, administrative director of the Seoul Lunar Photo, Ana Morales, production and program director of PHotoESPAÑA, and Zhuang Wubin, Singaporean writer, curator and artist.

During these one-on-one meetings, the photographers will receive suggestions, comments on their work as well as advice on possible career opportunities.

The works chosen during the reviews, along with those presented in the photo reviews held in Madrid, Casablanca and Sao Paulo, will form part of a collective exhibit that will be included in the Official Section of PHotoESPAÑA 2018 and will all compete for the Discovery Award for best portfolio.

Participating in the two-day photo reviews are Aeson Baldevia, Arthur Perset, Carlo Gabuco, Christian Tablazon, Czar Kristoff, Dennese Victoria, Erin Noir, Francisco Guerrero, Frank Callaghan, Gerome Soriano, Gian Cruz, Isabella May C. Montano, Jay Ganzon, Karl Castro, Kat C. Palasi, Linus Escandor, MM Yu, Veejay Villafranca,  Gerald Gloton and Daniel Vicedo.

Meanwhile, the School of Design and Arts of the DLSU-College of Saint Benilde opens its doors on the 17th of July (1.30 pm) to a conference on the book Photography in Southeast Asia: A survey by Zhuang Wubin. This work explores the evolution of photography in the 10 countries in the region.  During the conference, the author will expound on the main points of his book and raise some questions on the place of photography in the Philippine context.

On the 18th of July, Korean curator Jung Min Lee and Spanish expert Ana Morales will offer a workshop during which they will reveal the key to presenting a portfolio as well as the tools to design projects efficiently and learn to showcase and highlight one´s work before the reviewers.

Trasatlántica: 10 years of promoting encounters among professionals in photography

TrasatlánticaPHotoESPAÑA came into existence in 2009 through PHotoESPAÑA, an international festival of photography, to foster professional encounters, create job networks in the sector and promote exhibits on photography and visual arts.

Latin America served as the first venue for this forum´s initial activity, providing opportunities for newcomers in the industry of photography in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.

In 2016, Trasatlántica made its presence known in Africa, where a session of portfolio reviews was staged in Dakar.  This year, it returns to the continent with Casablanca playing host to another review in October, while Manila welcomes its first appearance in Asia, reflecting this international forum´s commitment to disseminating photography and visual arts around the world.
