Ambassador Calvo hosts a reception for former Filipino scholars

Pivotal to Spain´s relations with the Philippines is the exchange of knowledge which it implements through mobility programs aimed at giving Philippine nationals the opportunity to pursue studies and research in Spain and fostered by the excellent modern-day diplomatic relations between the two countries for the past seven decades so that the Spanish Ambassador, Luis Calvo, hosted former Filipino scholars at his official residence on May 15, an opportune time not only to celebrate  a milestone in both nations´  history but also to create a network of intellectuals and experts.

This gathering of scholars served as a platform for the promotion of the mobility programs offered by Spain and a valuable moment for scholars to share their experience and expertise. Some of the programs to be presented are the following:

 

MASTER’S STUDIES: MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS-AECID. Annually, Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MAEC) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) offers Educational grants for Master's studies for civil servants and staff in the public systems of priority countries for Spanish Cooperation, being the Philippines one of them. The priority academic fields are Development, Environmental Studies, Education, Gender Studies, Agriculture, and Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language, among others.

CULTURAL AMBASSADORS: LANGUAGE ASSISTANTS. Every year, the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, trough its Education Offices abroad selects young graduates who are willing to spend one full school year assisting in the teaching of Foreign Language while they improve their knowledge of Spanish Language and Culture. Interns receive an allowance of between 700-1000 euro per month (depending on the region they select) and work 12-16 hours per week assisting in the teaching of English. One of the largest mobility programs in the world, the language assistant programs takes over 3,000 young graduates to Spain every year. The program was opened to the Philippines in 2014, and in 2017 seventy two Filipino graduates will be teaching at Spanish Schools.

RESEARCH: HISPANEX GRANTS. Researchers connected to Higher Education Institutions from 12 different countries, including the Philippines, can apply for this annual program aimed at the promotion of cultural research and dissemination of Hispanic Studies. Grants, to a maximum of 15,000 cover travel expenses, accommodation, activities related to research or cultural activities, including publishing.

UNESCO HERITAGE YOUNG EXPERTS FORUM: ​In order to increase awareness of the challenges and potential impacts of a sustainable management of World Heritage sites; and to empower young experts to develop their own sustainable initiatives in their country contributing to make World Heritage fit for the future, the Spanish Secretary State for Culture organizes an annual Forum for Secondary School Students. Representatives from the Philippines took part in the 2015 Forum, and the country will also be present in the one to be held in July, 2017.


SHORT SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TEACHERS OF SPANISH. This program from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport in partnership with the Department of Education of the Philippines has allowed 30 Filipino teachers to be trained in the methodology of teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo in Santander (Spain). The main goal of the program is to strengthen the local structure for teaching of Spanish in the Philippines.


ERASMUS PLUS-EUROPEAN UNION MOBILITY PROGRAM. The former Erasmus Mundus program has been enhanced and transformed in the new Erasmus Plus (2014-2020). Spain, as top receiver of inbound Erasmus students has a high number of universities which coordinate or are partners of Erasmus projects. Philippine students from Higher Education Institutions which take part in a Erasmus program can spend a semester or a full school year in Spain.


PROGRAMME FOR THE INTERNATIONALISATION OF SPANISH CULTURE. Promoting the international presence of Spanish creators, professionals and artists is one of the strategic courses of action of Acción Cultural Española AC/E. This support for the Spanish cultural sector, both in the different fields of culture and in the new modes of production and distribution of the creative industries, is implemented through the  Programme for the Internationalisation of Spanish Culture (PICE) with the aim of enhancing its presence abroad, with AC/E acting as facilitator.
