Embassy of Spain hosts “WEST WINDS” – A musical experience
The Embassy of Spain, in collaboration with The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation (SJF), Spanish engineering company TSK and LASCO ICool, hosted its latest cultural event - “West Winds" a musical experience based on ‘West Side Story’. Concerts were held in Montego Bay on June 23 and Kingston on June 25, both free to the public, and formed part of the Embassy’s ongoing contribution to the promotion of music and the arts in Jamaica.
West Winds featured performances from Spanish saxophone quartet, Sigma Project, and violinist Cecilia Bercovich, paying homage to the 100th anniversary of the birth of American composer Leonard Bernstein, known for his role in promoting the arts with his television lectures on classical music. The music for ‘West Side Story’, one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time, was composed by Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and is widely regarded as one of the best ever.
Ambassador of Spain, His Excellency Josep María Bosch, viewed the concerts as a cultural exchange between Spain and Jamaica and was particularly enthused about sharing the experience with attendees from the west, where most Spanish businesses and hotels in the island are located. “We are excited to host one of the concerts in the beautiful location of Rose Hall, Great House, thanks to the collaboration of Michelle Rollins, a great supporter of the Arts”. We want to contribute to the cultural life in the area where our investors and most Spaniards reside, in order to get closer to the communities and its people”.
The four Spanish saxophonists Ángel Soria, Andrés Gomis, Alberto Chaves and Josetxo Silguero and lone female violinist Bercovich also met and shared lessons with youth in Kingston and Montego Bay. Montego Bay Community College hosted the workshop for students in the western part of the island, while youngsters in Kingston and surrounding areas gathered at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.
The SIGMA Project saxophone quartet has performed at more than 150 concerts across the world. Cecelia Bercovich, a multifaceted performer of the violin and viola, was an artist in Residence at the Banff Centre in Canada.
The upcoming concerts and workshops will take Ángel Soria to Jamaica for a third time. His last visit saw him perform at the 2016 Xaymaca concert by Jamaican composer Peter Ashbourne with the Samuel Felsted Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica. In 2015, the Spanish-born educator hosted a classical music workshop at the Alpha Institute and the National Youth Orchestra of Jamaica, as well as a Master Class on Contemporary music at Edna Manley College. This year, the audience was treated to yet another collaboration with Mr. Ashbourne.
The Embassy is grateful to the events’ co-sponsors whose support ensured that the free admission concerts can be accessed by as wide a cross-section of attendees as possible thereby expanding on Bernstein’s own passion for exposing the arts.
