SPANISH IMMERSION DAY 2018
3/16/2018
This year, The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation (SJF) once again partnered with the Ministry of Education and the National Association of Spanish Teachers (ANPE) to stage Spanish Immersion Days in Kingston, Manchester, St. James and Clarendon. These practice seminars will provide CSEC students with tools to assist them in their examinations in April.
This was the 6th staging of the activity, which initially began in Kingston with 150 students in attendance. This year, the Immersion Days saw over 1,300 students from across the island participating and practising with native speakers, trained CSEC teachers and pre-service teachers for the upcoming oral examinations.
In Kingston, The SJF was supported by embassies of five Spanish-speaking countries namely Spain, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Panama and Colombia. Students visited the booths of each participating country and participated in a question and answer session with Embassy representatives before having their ‘passport’ stamped. The booths showcased vibrant displays; students learned pertinent facts about each country and received novelty items as well as worksheets to aid in their preparation.
The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation (SJF), founded in 2006, is a collaborative effort of a number of Spanish companies with investments in Jamaica. The main objective is to strengthen the friendship between Spain and Jamaica through educational, cultural, environmental and health-based community development initiatives. Support for the teaching and learning of Spanish is one of The SJF’s priority areas of focus.
Sponsorship for the event was provided by Seprod Foundation, with additional support from Wisynco Group Limited and the Jamaica Biscuit Company Limited.
