2017 Spanish Carol Service - Out of Many, One Language
11/30/2017
On November 30, students of Spanish from various educational institutions across Kingston, St. Andrew and surrounding parishes gathered at the Webster Memorial United Church to celebrate Christmas in a Carol Service conducted entirely in Spanish.

The Spanish Carol Service is an initiative of the Embassy of Spain and The Spanish-Jamaican Foundation (SJF). The concert is a legacy of Jamaican teacher of Spanish Emma-June Bell who initiated it more than ten years ago.
Students experienced a full immersion in Spanish culture through attendance and participation in either the reading of Bible verses or the singing of traditional and modern carols in Spanish. The overall objective was to expose the students to the various cultures and to encourage the practice and use of Spanish.
The Embassy of Spain along with the Embassies of Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Panama and the United States worked alongside students of Crayons Count,  Stony Hill Primary and Junior High, Calabar High School, Mico Practising Primary and Junior High, Kingston Technical High School, St. Richard’s Primary, Promise Learning Centre, Genesis Academy,  The Queen’s School, Norman Manley High School, Immaculate Conception High School and Prep School, St George’s College, Shortwood Teachers College, Alpha Institute and The American International School of Kingston, over the past months to make this year’ staging a reality.
His Excellency Josep Bosch, Ambassador of Spain to Jamaica, arrived in May 2017 with a clear willingness to support the promotion of the Spanish language in the island throughout his mandate. “The time has come to work together to make Spanish a spoken language in Jamaica”, insisted the Ambassador.
The event stands as an excellent model for cultural activities that encourage bilingualism, a tool of distinction in today’s market place and a political aspiration publicly stated by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
