Embassy of Spain launches Gloria Fuertes Centenary Celebrations in Jamaica
11/20/2017
The Embassy of Spain introduced a Spanish flavour to this year’s staging of the National Storytelling Day Activities, the launch of which took place November 20, 2017 at parish libraries across the island.
Collaborating with Ntkuma, the organisers of Ananse Soundsplash, the Embassy of Spain showcased the work of Gloria Fuertes, Spanish icon of children’s literature, in this the centenary of her birth.
On November 20, Spanish teachers in training at Church, Sam Sharpe and Shortwood Teachers’ Colleges; Cathy Cervantes, Spanish teacher at Happy Grove High School, Port Antonio; and storytellers and librarians island wide partnered with the Embassy to present  a few of the author’s poems, in the vibrancy and melodious tones of the Spanish language and patois respectively.
Gloria Fuertes was and is an icon of children’s literature in Spain. She is viewed as a major poet who knew how to impart the love of books to children, opening the door to the amazing world of literature. A great master of communication, Fuertes knew how to get close to children; and with the magic of language, she conquered their hearts. She not only wrote but was also a great defender of children’s rights.
Gloria Fuertes’ centenary celebrations are scheduled to continue until next year with visits to primary and secondary schools.
The decision to translate some of Gloria Fuertes’ poems to patois was based on the similarity of her work to Jamaica’s Honourable Louise Bennett Coverly, fondly known as “Ms. Lou”, in her skilled weaving of language to entertain and educate children.
The Mission is pleased to be a part of this important day that coincides with Universal Children’s Day and facilitates a practical recognition of the Right of the Child to culture and heritage.
