Embassy of Spain hosts Human Rights Seminars and Youth Fora
11/6/2017
In the context of Spain’s recent election to the UN Human Rights Council in October for the 2018 - 2020 period and Jamaica’s support of this candidature, the Embassy of Spain in Kingston hosted a series of seminars as well as Youth Fora under the theme Understanding the Work of the United Nations Human Rights Treaty bodies & Working Groups: Examples from the CERD and the WGEPAD during the week of November 6 to 10, 2017.
The Seminars and Youth Fora not only celebrated Spain’s election but also offered a tangible collaboration within the framework of the United Nations and Human Rights.
The aim was to provide a cross-section of Jamaicans with information required to understand the work of the Human Rights Council and the various Human Rights Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures.
The series focused on the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), taking advantage of the fact that Spain, like Jamaica, has an expert on the CERD. Spain’s CERD Expert, Nicolás Marugan, teamed up with Jamaica’s CERD Expert, Professor Verene Shepherd to host the four (4) seminars and two (2) Youth Fora. Professor Shepherd is the first Jamaican to be a member of this committee and gained the highest number of electoral votes in the June 2015 elections for same. She is also the former Chair of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGEPAD).
Seminars were held for representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the University of the West Indies, Mona, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), and the Ministry of Justice while youth presentations took place at the Queen’s School and Jamaica College.
Youth leaders discussed discrimination, racism, school bullying, the role of education in the fight against racial discrimination as well as youth advocates against racism and for justice and for the programme of activities for the Decade.
Spain participates in virtually every one of the United Nations organisations and systems bodies and is one of the top ten providers of assessed financial contributions, providing 3.177% of the UN Budget.
