Cooperation
Spain’s cooperation programme for the Caribbean Community is geared towards supporting regional integration and strengthening the CARICOM organization.
 
The official channel for Spanish Cooperation in the Caribbean is the CARICOM Secretariat based in Georgetown, Guyana. All activities/projects are included in the CARICOM Regional Cooperation Programme.
 
Projects financed by Spain in Jamaica with regional scope
 
Health
 
-          Project for the Prevention and Control of Uterine Cancer
This projectincluded a training component with the hosting of seminars in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago in which representatives from the entire region participated.  In addition, colposcopes were donated to all CARICOM member countries.
 
In Jamaica, Spanish Cooperation has financed the construction and equipping of the Queen Sofía Women’s Centre at the Spanish Town Hospital (provides complete gynaecological and psychological attention to adolescent mothers and pregnant women as well as victims of gender-based violence).
 
 - Reconstruction, rehabilitation and donation of furniture and medical instruments for the wing dedicated to physical rehabilitation at the Spanish Town Hospital, that was named “The King of Spain Wing” following its inauguration by the King and Queen of Spain.
 
AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY
 
-          Support for the establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Advanced Technology in Agriculture (CEATA) for training in new high performance agricultural technologies.  It includes an investment component (construction of two hi-tech greenhouses) as well as and other technical assistance (organization of two regional training workshops for trainers and producers).
 
EDUCATION AND CULTURE
 
- The Embassy of Spain in Jamaica organises numerous cultural cooperation activities which specifically target and support the teaching of Spanish such as an intensive workshop for Spanish teachers in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute; the donation of educational material; provision of scholarships granting access to the on-line Spanish course - Aula Virtual de Español-AVE, among others.
