Certificates from the Civil Registry
10/11/2016

You might need a Civil Registry Certificate concerning a birth, marriage or death that happened in Spain and was registered in the Spainsh Civil Registry.

The certificates can be ordered by post or online and they are free of charge.

To request a Birth Certificate:

1. Look for the "Libro de Familia" that you were issued when registering the birth (or the parent's marriage, if that was registered in Spain too) and check the place, tome and page number of the birth registration.

2. Go to the relevant page in the website of the Spanish Ministry of Justice. The website is available in English.

3. Read the relevant information on that page. Check which type of certificate you need.

4. Scroll down to the end of the page, where you will be able to choose to order your certificate in person, by post or online. If you choose one of the first two, the instructions are straightforward and in English in the website.

5. If you choose to request the certificate online, click on the link to Sede Electrónica.

6. Scroll down to "Birth Certificate Request - Online processing without a Digital Certificate"

7. Select the place where the birth took place. First choose the region (Comunidad Autónoma) and then the province.

8. Select the Judicial Party the place where the birth happened belongs to. This information is also in the Libro de Familia, in the page where the birth is recorded.

9. Select the type of certificate. If you request a literal or a short-form and you need the certificate for non-Spanish authorities, you will need it to have The Hague Apostille on it. In that case, you should add the text "Preciso que el certificado solicitado esté apostillado" in the field marked as "purpose for requesting the certificate".
