NIE (Número de identificación de extranjero)

The Foreigner Identification Number (NIE, by its Spanish acronym) is an all-purpose personal identification number and tax code that is associated to a foreigner for all their administrative official proceedings with Spanish authorities. It consists of nine digits: a letter, followed by a seven-digit number, and another letter.

Foreigners who have a relationship with Spain for economic, professional or social reasons may need a NIE. A foreigner who intends to buy or sell a property or a car, to sign up to a utility will need a NIE. The NIE will be the foreigner's identifier and will appear on all documents issued or related to them.

A NIE is compulsory for all foreigners who reside in Spain.

Although a NIE never expires, some authorities may require their holder to produce an updated certification of the data in the Central Registry of Foreigners.

As a general rule, the application for a NIE is submitted in Spain. Foreigners must apply for their NIE within 90 days after entry into Spain at the Foreigners Office of the province in which they reside or envisage residing. Get an appointment at a Foreigners Office before travelling to Spain.

However, residents in the Republic of Ireland who need a NIE for economic, professional or social reasons, but do not intend to move their residence to Spain, may apply for a NIE at this Spanish Embassy in Dublin. They shall provide documentary evidence of their economic, professional or social interests that warrant their application: either copy of the purchase contract / deposit (payment and signal), or copy of the contract for transnational services, or certificate from the bank requiring a NIE for the opening of a bank account, etc.

The NIE obtained through this Embassy is merely a tax identification document and does not give any residence rights in Spain or to remain in Spain longer than authorized by the current immigration regulations.

Any foreigner who might need a NIE in relation to their current or future residence in Spain, must apply for it in Spain, not at this Embassy in Dublin.

The Spanish Embassy in Dublin only processes applications for NIE's from Irish or foreign nationals who are legally resident in Ireland.

Before coming to the Embassy, the applicant must have obtained an appointment online. Get an appointment at the Embassy.

The applicant can submit the necessary documents either in person or by an accredited representative.

The application will consist of the following documents:

a) Valid Passport or National Identity Card, original and copy.

b) Application form (EX-15), filled out and signed by the applicant. The form is completed online, printed and signed. If the applicant already has a NIE and requests its renewal, he/she must mark "Certificate" in paragraph 4.1. of the form. This form is translated into English and will help those not proficient in Spanish to complete it. You should only complete the fields whose text is underlined in green on the first to pages of the form.

c) A proof of effective residence in the Republic of Ireland (a utility bill, a letter the applicant’s bank stating name and address in the Republic of Ireland).

d) Documentary evidence of the economic, professional or social interests which make a NIE necessary for the applicant. The applicant should not provide documents that have been issued by any Spanish Public Administration or that the applicant has already submitted for any previous administrative procedure. Should that be the case, kindly list in annex I of the application form those documents not submitted. It is assumed that the applicant authorizes the Ministry of the Interior to consult the Public Administrations that have issued those documents, unless otherwise stated in annex II.

An administrative fee (€9.74) should be paid on submission of documents.

NIE number is received in PDF format by email within 2/3 weeks after submission of application.
