Schengen Visa

​Here you will find all the information related to obtaining Schengen visas.


General information
A Schengen visa allows the holder to travel in all of these countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Australian passport holders travelling to Schengen countries for holidays, business or to visit family do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days in a 180 day-period provided the visit is not for gainful activity.  Please note that the 90 days will start counting from the date they enter any of the Schengen countries, including Spain.  Please click here to read the text of the Agreement.
For stays of under 90 days for gainful activity, please contact the Consular office of Spain in your place of residence in Australia, as per the list above.  If you wish to stay in Spain for more than 90 days for other activities, you will have to apply for a visa.

Visa processing may take up to 15 days and includes photo and fingerprints taken at the Consular office as part of the requirements.  Applicants must lodge their visa applications in person and collect their visas, if approved, also in person. Please make an appointment to lodge your application by email request to .
Please note that during the examination of a visa application, some additional documents may be requested in order to determine that all requirements to obtain the visa are met.  
You will be required to present original documents and a photocopy.  Originals will be returned after they are sighted at the Consular office.

Please submit:
1. Schengen visa application form​​: The application form must be filled in duplicate, signed and dated. (Please make sure you have the latest version (2020) of the visa application form)
2. Passport or travel document (must be valid for three months counting from the intended date of return to Australia).   Please note that there are countries you may be travelling through or to which require 6 months of passport validity so make sure that you check with their embassies/consulates or the airline/s you are travelling with.
3. Two recent passport size photos: (white background, 2x2in) One per application form (glued, not stapled). 
4. Travel itinerary (return flights – must show an airline booking) Please inform the consular office staff if you are leaving the Schengen area at any time in order to ensure that you get the correct number of entries in your visa label.
5. Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings for the full itinerary in each of the Schengen and non-Schengen countries, if visiting more than one) If invited to stay with family or friends, the original letter of invitation from your relative/host issued by the Police in Spain will be required as part of the accommodation requirements.
6. Proof of financial means (bank statements of the last three months prior to lodging of the application)
If supported by parents/guardians: a statutory declaration by the person who will be responsible for covering the cost of your trip.  This document must be accompanied by your birth certificate, ID and bank statements of the person responsible for assuming financial responsibility. 
7. Proof of overseas health/travel insurance the policy should cover medical and hospital, medical evacuation and repatriation of remains for the amount of 30,000 euros or equivalent in local currency.  
Please note that Schengen visa travel insurance must not have excess (it should appear on the policy as $0 excess) 
8. Proof of visa status - VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) (must include Visa Grant Number and conditions of the visa) 
9. Minors (applicants who are under 18 years of age) must submit a notarised travel authorisation letter from their parents or legal guardians.
10. Letter from employer or study centre
If employed, original and signed verification letter of employment 
If a student, a letter from the study centre stating current student status

- The processing fee is not refundable if the visa is not granted or cancelled. 
- Please confirm the current visa fees with the Consulate.
If you need to stop in Spain in transit or double transit, you must only submit those documents referred to in points: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 & 8 and the visa fees. ​
