Spain and Romania, geographically apart on Western and Eastern boundaries of the European continent, are, however, closely related Latin countries, bonded by history and language roots. Diplomatic relations between Spain and Romania were established at the end of the XIX century, in 1881, when Spain opened a Legation in Bucharest, which was active until 1945. Later on, in 1967, Spain opened a Consular and Commercial Office in Bucharest, which in 1977 became the Embassy of Spain in Romania, after full diplomatic relations were restored.
Since 1977 bilateral relations between Spain and Romania have been developing on solid grounds, based on mutual feelings of friendship and understanding, similar views on a number of international issues, and growing economic and commercial ties. Spain, which has welcome on its territory almost one million Romanian citizens, has also strengthened its relations with Romania in the cultural, social and education fields.
Spain and Romania are close partners in the European Union, and our Armed Forces regularly cooperate as allies in the framework of the Atlantic Alliance.
The Embassy of Spain in Bucharest stands as an important instrument for the promotion of Spanish interests in Romania, and for the protection of Spanish citizens’ rights in this country. In this regard, the Embassy applies a permanent policy of “open doors”, inviting all Spanish citizens to count on it.
I am hopeful that the “web” page of this Embassy may be a useful tool to provide answers to questions and doubts of Spanish and Romanian citizens who need information regarding services, activities and functions of the Embassy.
Thank you for visiting our page.
Yours sincerely
Manuel Larrotcha
Ambassador of Spain
