The opening ceremony of the mural BUTTERFLY EFFECT, by the artists Esther Pizarro (www.estherpizarro.es) and Olimpia Velasco (olimpiavelasco.com) has taken place at the Chancellery of the Spanish Embassy in the Kingdom of Belgium on September 23 2020. The piece participated in the international call "We are nature. A wall against climate change" organised by the City of Brussels and the Spanish Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium, in collaboration with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Climate Action.
The aim of this partnership is to promote public awareness through public art of the importance of the Sustainable Development Objective (SDA) 13 of Agenda 2030 - Climate Action: taking urgent action to combat climate change and its effects. #EUClimatePact
The mural, measuring 21mx6.1m, was selected by a jury of Belgian and Spanish experts in June 2020 as part of the international public art competition "We are nature. A wall against climate change", with a budget of 12,000 euros, organised by the Brussels City Council and the Spanish Embassy, which will be included in the catalogue and official tour of the City of Brussels "Parcours Street Art" (https://parcoursstreetart.brussels/ ).
The project has been financed in by Brussels City Council and the Spanish Embassy, the latter with funds from Programa Ventana ("A window on Spanish culture") of the Cultural and Scientific Relations Directorate of AECID (Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation), part of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
Among the 107 proposals submitted to the call by artists and groups from all over Europe, the Cervantes Institute in Brussels (www.bruselas.cervantes.es ) and the Cultural and Scientific Department of the Spanish Embassy (www.spainculture.be ) have organised a digital exhibition with more than 20 finalists, according to the selection that received the highest score from the jury: http://paf.re/g/somos_naturaleza .
Other activities will soon be incorporated into the project, including webinars and digital and audiovisual material that can serve as a "toolbox" or resource kit to inspire similar initiatives in other parts of the world.
BUTTERFLY EFFECT is an artistic proposal, conceived as a "site-specific" installation and invites the viewer to reflect on the fragile balance that exists between nature and the traces that we humans leave on its flora and fauna. Focusing on three artistic elements (the tree, the person and the butterfly), this artistic proposal emphasizes that small actions can provoke great changes, propitiating a sustainable harmony between the human being and his environment. The mark of the city of Brussels is fixed on the fragile wings of the butterfly that, with its flight, reunites the urban with the natural, to end up resting on the tree.
For a further insight of the context of this mural, the exhibition of drawings of the two artists can be visited within the exhibition space of the Embassy- LAB (Spain Arts and Science LAB in Belgium) from 23 September 2020 to 15 January 2021, by appointment through the Cultural and Scientific Department of the Embassy: emb.bruselas.ofc@maec.es .

"This fresco of rare strength and poetry stands before us today as a reminder that in Brussels the fight against pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions remains a priority... And what better way than street art, this form of art and expression accessible to all, to promote such objectives to the greatest number of people? For if sustainability is one of the values I hold and defend every day as a citizen of the world and as a politician, the accessibility of culture, as Councillor for Culture and Tourism, is also one of my priorities... And I am also delighted that it is two women who have won this call, because it is my ambition to feminise our Parcours Street Art - and (believe me) we are on the right track! ", emphasizes Delphine Houba, Councillor for Culture, Tourism and Major Events of the City of Brussels.

In the words of the Ambassador of Spain to the Kingdom of Belgium, Beatriz Larrotcha, "from this first experience carried out in the capital of Europe, thanks to a fruitful institutional collaboration and the creativity and generosity of the artists involved, the project We are nature - A wall against climate change, will continue to develop with the aim of radiating this good Brussels practice to other places in the world, taking advantage of walls and other virtual and real spaces in order to express, through public art, the commitment of international society to act urgently to safeguard the future of our Planet; the suggestive languages and symbols used by the artists who have participated remind us that, indeed, we are all nature".
