Education and Health
Education:

Since 1979, the educational system in Nigeria depends on the Federal Government, which established a compulsory 6-year primary school system, although there is still a certain percentage of children who cannot go to school.

Education is imparted in local languages (Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, etc) as well as in English, and comprises a 6-year primary school cycle and 6-year secondary school system.

Given that the quality of education in Nigeria differs from that of Spain, what is recommended, as much as possible, is education at the International schools (British, North American, French) existing in the major cities.

There are no Spanish schools in Nigeria.

Health:

Apart from the obligatory vaccination against yellow fever, it is recommended, especially for those who will travel to rural areas, to also get vaccinated hepatitis A and B, tetanus, typhoid fever and meningitis.

The is a strong incidence of Malaria all over the country, for which reason it is strongly recommended to get anti-malarial treatment in cases of short stay, and to frequently make use of mosquito repellents, above all, at dawn and at sunset.

African tripanosomiasis or sleeping sickness constitutes a risk in the rural areas. Other frequent deseases include amoebic, bacterial, viral o parasitological diarrhea, as well as typhoid fever, tuberculosis and conjunctivitis. Nigeria is the only African country that has not been able to completely eradicate polio.

The HIV/Aids prevalence rate is lower than in other African countries, although it can be estimated that 6% of the population between 20 and 29 is infected.

Food hygiene measures should be taken to the extreme before consuming any uncooked food.

Tap water is not potable, for which reason one should always drink bottled water.

Medical Services:

The level of medical services are low, not even that of the most advanced and highly expensive health centres is comparable to that existing in Spain. Medical evacuation to Europe is recommended for any serious medical eventuality.

However, the detection and treatment of malaria is quicker and more efficient in Nigeria that in advanced countries.

It is advisable to travel armed with medical insurance that should cover any type of medical problem as well as eventual repatriation.
