TRANSFER OF MORTAL REMAINS TO SPAIN
The Consulate will provide all the information needed in order to register the death of a citizen of Spain in the Consular Registry. We will also provide information about the procedures to transfer the mortal remains into Spain, if that is the family’s decision. The Consulate will not be responsible for any fees related to such transfer to Spain.
Note: Please allow at least 48 hours between presenting the documents for the tranfer at the Consulate and the departure of the remains of the deceased.
Transfer of corpses
Must bring to the Consulate:
- Letter addressed to the General Consul seeking authorization for the transfer.
- Death certificate issued by the local authorities (this certificate must bear the Apostille of the Hague Convention).
- Embalming certificate.
- Certificate of the Non-Existence of Contagious Diseases issued by the Department of Health, Permit to transfer the corpse and photocopy of the passport or identification.
- Data about the transfer to Spain (airline company, flight number, date)
The Consulate will issue a Certificate addressed to the captain of the aircraft to be passed on to the Customs Manager (Administrador de Aduanas) in Spain stating that all proper paperwork has been submitted.
Transfer of ashes
It is also recommended to contact the airline before the travel to confirm if they allow to carry the urn as carry-on baggage or any other specific requirement applies.
