NIE APPLICATION INFORMATION (FOREIGNER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER)

If you are going to live in Spain for more than 6 moths, you will get the NIE with your Resident/Student Card, for which you must apply upon arrival.
If you need a NIE because you have business or economic interests in Spain and you are not travelling to Spain or your travel is shorter than 6 months, you can apply for a NIE in Spain or in this office, personally or by a person representing you with a Power of Attorney, with the following documents:
 
1.- Passport*, original and one copy. The copy will be authenticated and annexed to your application with no additional charge.
*If the person applying for the NIE or Certificate of Non Residence in Spain was previously a citizen of Spain, they must also provide a copy of the "Naturalization Certificate".
This form should be filled out from the computer. Please note that you will not be able to save your changes, print it out immediately after filled. It must be signed at this office, in the presence the official in charge. See below for more instructions on this form.
This form must be filled out on the computer and printed out at the end. Please bring the print out document to the Consulate. Click here for instructions to complete the form.
4.- Payment of the consular fee ($11.00 for the first time and $8.00 to renew it). For the Certificate of Non Residence the fee is $50.00 for US citizens and $8.00 for foreigners of other nationalities. The fee has to be paid by USPS money order
 
There is no appointment to apply for the NIE. You may come during our office hours and the consular services will try to assist you as soon as possible. Please remember that you will be required to explain the reasons of your application.
 
If you can not submit the form personally at this Consulate, it can be done by another person who represents you with a Power of Attorney (original document). This person will sign the EX15 form at the Consulate instead of you and complete all the representative´s personal details required in the second part of the EX15 form (see below for instructions).
