- Spanish institutions in the Philippines
At present, the number of Spanish nationals registered at the Consulate General is 4,105; of which 3,775 are residents and 330 are non-residents. Among the residents, the majority are Spanish nationals married to Filipinos or Spanish businessmen that have business interests in this country. We have to emphasize that there is a remarkable amount of Filipinos with Spanish ancestry that play a very important role in the economic and social life in the Philippines.
There is a relatively large number of Spaniards, descendants of Spanish nationals that have established their residency here for many generations, who have retained their nationality but do not speak nor have any connection to Spain aside from the periodical renewal of their Spanish passport.
Lastly, there has been a 15% increase in the number of Spanish nationals between 2009 to 2011 due to the acquisition of the Spanish nationality by virtue of Law 52/2007, commonly known as Historical Memory Law.
