IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Philippines accedes to the Apostille Convention

On May 14, 2019, the Philippines implemented the Apostille Convention on matters of authenticating documents. This means that from that day onwards the Philippines started affixing an Apostille Certificate, as proof of authentication, on Philippine documents for use abroad. The authorized Philippine government agency to issue an Apostille is the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines.

In view thereof, all documents obtained in the Philippines for use in Spain should be presented first to the Department of Foreign Affairs (https://www.dfa.gov.ph/) for the affixation of the Apostille Certificate. The apostillized documents shall no longer need legalization by the Consulate General of Spain in Manila.

Likewise, all public documents executed and apostillized in Spain shall no longer need the authentication certificate of the Philippine Embassy in Madrid. They shall be valid for use in the Philippines beginning 14 May 2019. The authorized Spanish government office to issue an Apostille is the Ministry of Justice in Spain, at this address and telephone: Calle de la Bolsa, 8. 28071 Madrid Tel. 902.007.214.
