Frequent Questions Passports and Enrollment

1. My passport is going to expire soon. How early can I renew it?
You may renew your passport if it expires in 6 months or less. Remember that the dates will be in Spanish format: day-month-year.
 
2. Can I complete a passport application by mail?
No. Your physical presence is required at the Consulate so that we can take your fingerprints.
 
3. Do I need an appointment to renew my passport?
Yes. Making an appointment is an indispensable requirement to obtain a passport.
 
4. I need to renew two or more passports. How many appointments should I schedule?
You need to schedule one appointment per person.
 
5. I need to schedule or cancel an appointment. How can I do that?
You will need to make all changes through the online scheduler. The Consulate is not able to cancel your appointment by phone or email.
 
6. Can I receive my biometric passport at my appointment?
No. Once you have finished applying for a passport at the Consulate, the new document takes between 3-4 weeks to prepare.
 
7. How long does it take to receive my new passport?
Passports are issued in Spain so they can take about 3-4 weeks to arrive.
 
8. Can the Consulate send me my passport by mail?
Yes, as long as you provide a pre-paid USPS Express Mail envelope. This can be purchased in any US Post Office (www.usps.com).
 
9. Can somebody else pick up my passport in my stead?
No, we will send your new passport by postal mail.
 
10. How should I pay the passport fee?
The passport fees MUST be made with a Money Order. We cannot accept personal checks, credit cards or debit cards.
 
11. How can I see the status of my passport application?
You can visit the following webpage, with the information found in ‘’recibo’’ conformation of the application: http://sutramiteconsular.maec.es
 
 12. My passport is about to expire, but I am going to Spain in a few weeks. Am I able to renew my passport in Spain?
Even though this is not correct, if you must renew your passport in Spain or in any other Consulate, you need to send us an email with a copy of your new passport (cog.losangeles.pas@maec.es). This will allow to information to be maintained and assure that you are not unenrolled from the Consular Registry.
 
13. Can I apply for my passport at the Consulate and then pick it up in Spain?
No. If you apply at the Consulate, you will need to pick it up from the Consulate.
 
14. I do not have a Green Card or visa. Are those required to be able to renew my passport?
No. Your right to documentation as a Spanish citizen prevails.
 
15. If I need to register the birth of my child and apply for their passport, should I make an appointment with Civil Registry and another with Passports?
No. You only need to make an appointment with Civil Registry, but still bring all of the documents for both procedures when you come to the Consulate.
 
16. I need to authorize the processing of my child’s passport who lives in Spain or at another Consulate. What should I do?
You should come to this Consulate with your valid passport. In order to sign and send the authorization, you will need to provide proof of paternity or tutorship and the email address of the Comisaría de Policía or Consulate where the authorization is being sent.
 
17. Am I able to get a certificate of un-enrollment or residence without having been enrolled?
No. Only Spaniards that have been enrolled in the ‘’Registro de Matrícula Consular’’ (Consular Registration) are able to obtain those types of certificates.
 
18. I want to return to Spain and need to bring all of my belongings, but do not want to pay customs fees. What do I need to do?
You need a ‘’Certificado de Baja Consular’’ (Certificate of Withdrawal from Consular Registration) which can only be obtained if you have been enrolled for one continuous year as a resident in ‘’Registro de Martícula Consular’’ (Consular Registration).
 
19. I need to renew my ‘’DNI’’ (Spanish ID Card). Can I renew or obtain it at the Consulate?
No. A ‘’DNI’’ can only be obtained in Spain. For more information, you can visit the following page: www.dnielectronico.es
