Visa and Entry Requirements

UPDATE: From  January 1st 2021, European Union regime will no longer apply to UK citizens.  

•From 1st January, British citizens travelling to Spain will not need a tourist visa for stays of less than 3 months in a period of 180 days (as before). However, a valid British passport with a validity of at least 90 days beyond the return date from Schengen area will be mandatory.

•From 1st January, British citizens travelling to Spain will need a visa for stays of longer than 90 days in a period of 180 days (see “long term visas” paragraph below).

•From 1st January, relatives of British citizens travelling to Spain must apply for a tourist visa (not for an “EU spouse visa” as before) through BLS if their nationality is not exempt (see LIST.pdf).

JURISDICTION OF THE SPANISH CONSULATE IN EDINBURGH: In order to apply through our Consulate, the applicant must be a legal resident in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Cleveland, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear or Tees Valley (Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton on Tees, Hartlepool, Darlington and Middlesbrough).
-This visa allows stays in the Schengen Area of up to 90 days (within any period of 180 days) for the purpose of tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, studies, placements in companies or volunteer activities with a duration of less than 3 months, or for other unremunerated activities. It also allows transit across the territory and within an airport. 
-The Schengen visa is issued to third nationals of states included in  Annex I of the Regulation (EU) 2018/1806.pdf.
-Applications must be lodge at BLS’s Visa Application center in Edinburgh or Manchester, depending on the place of residence*

*Nationals of third countries who are family members of an EU citizen have the right to submit their visa application directly to this Consulate prior appointment.
-All foreigners wishing to enter Spain to reside, reside and work, or study, need to hold a visa of this kind, unless they are citizens of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.
-You can only apply for this kind of visas directly at this Consulate General in person, by appointment through the email: E-mail us with your personal details, what type of application are you requesting and two intended dates for your appointment. Currently applications are limited to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 13.30 to 14.30 due to COVID restrictions.
-Visa process takes up to 1 month, except for non-lucrative visas which take up to 3 months.
-The visa application requires payment of the corresponding regulatory fee at the moment of the submission. This fee will not be refunded even if the requested visa is not granted or the application is not accepted due to incomplete documentation.
